NEW BRITAIN, CT – July 29, 2024 – Charter Oak State College (www.CharterOak.edu), Connecticut’s public online College, is partnering with Trinity Health Of New England and Capital Workforce Partners on the Good Jobs Challenge Grant Employment Training Program, designed to provide entry-level career pathways to under and unemployed members of the community. Students in the 12-week online program will be trained as Patient Registrars, patient-facing roles that are part of the Revenue Cycle Management team. They will earn a digital badge from Credly and begin a defined pathway towards further degrees.

The program will consist of two cohorts of 25 participants and will provide them with the training to begin their career path. The courses are designed to feed into existing degree programs at Charter Oak, including Bachelor of Science degrees in Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Care Administration. If a student is not yet ready to pursue a bachelor’s degree, Charter Oak offers a credit-bearing certificate in HIM Fundamentals.

Charter Oak State College President Ed Klonoski said, “This important grant supports our mission to advance Connecticut’s workforce.  Together with Trinity Health Of New England, a trusted healthcare provider and regional employer, and Capital Workforce Partners, we’re proud to provide high-quality online training to underserved residents so they can earn key credentials, leading to careers in healthcare.  Grants like the Good Jobs Challenge are essential to helping underserved residents get the training they need while helping employers fill needed jobs in the healthcare workforce.”

“We are proud to partner with Charter Oak State College and Capital Workforce Partners on the Good Jobs Grant program,” said Montez Carter, FACHE, President and CEO, Trinity Health Of New England. “Our respective missions and values are fully aligned, as each organization is committed to providing the underserved populations in our communities with equal opportunities. Every role in health care plays an important part in the patient journey. Collaboration and educational partnerships like this ensure vital, patient-facing roles are filled with well-trained individuals who may not have otherwise been afforded the opportunity for a meaningful career serving as a valuable member of the health care team.”

Students are enrolled in the program free of charge and will be provided a laptop loaded with Microsoft 365 to complete their coursework. The online learning schedule allows flexibility for students in the program, especially for those unable to leave current jobs to attend classes in person, and provides equity for those with disabilities, transportation, or childcare challenges. Students will also benefit from live webinars with current Trinity Health Of New England Revenue Cycle colleagues along with in-person shadowing opportunities. Through these on-site hours, students will be able to experience “real-life” examples of the position they are training for with current Trinity Health Of New England employees.

Participants in the program will have the support of a career and academic navigator who will provide career counseling and job-readiness skills through regular webinars that are both live and recorded for future use. In addition, Charter Oak has contracted with LinkedIn Learning to provide “soft skills” to grant students, including basic computer, customer service, and communication skills. The program will also include access to a Coursera Academy curriculum from CVS on health care customer service.

“Workforce development is a critical pillar in supporting innovative and competitive economic development and Capital Workforce Partners is pleased to be working hand-in-hand with extraordinary partners like Trinity Health Of New England Partners & Charter Oak State College to strengthen local economic growth and vitality by providing access to exciting healthcare careers for underserved jobseekers in our community,” said Alex Johnson, President & CEO, Capital Workforce Partners.  “The Good Jobs Challenge prioritizes employer leadership and hiring commitments, which we know are critical to expanding career opportunities for more Americans to reach their full potential and secure good jobs, leading to a robust regional and national economy.”

Once students have completed the course, they will be eligible for open Patient Access positions at Trinity Health Of New England hospitals, including Saint Francis Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, as well as Trinity Health Of New England Medical Group locations throughout the region.

If interested in training, candidates can call the GJC/CCT phone number at (860) 359-5104. A Career Advisor will answer the call and provide additional information and next steps!
