NEW BRITAIN, CT, [August 7, 2024] – Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding Center is urgently seeking volunteers to fulfill our mission of rebuilding lives through the horse and human connection. Volunteers are needed to support the center’s fall session starting September 10, 2024. Various volunteer opportunities are available, including working with participants and horses or performing office tasks.

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of our therapeutic riding center. They bring passion, dedication, and a personal touch that enriches the experience for our participants and horses alike,” said Sarah Castellani, program manager, “Without their unwavering support, we couldn’t achieve the profound impact we make in the lives of individuals with disabilities.”

Manes & Motions provides equine-assisted activities that benefit individuals impacted by autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, stroke or traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and more. PATH International certified instructors and volunteers work with individuals ages four and above in a positive and safe environment to develop independence, confidence and life skills that reach beyond the barn.

Volunteers typically commit to one class per week for a full semester. The fall session runs from September 10 to December 14 (a total of 13 weeks). All volunteers must be at least 14 years old to apply and are required to attend a training session prior to volunteering. There are two roles that the center is looking for specifically:

Side Walkers: Side walkers walk alongside the horse during the riding lesson, help with questions, encouragement, and other support that assists the rider in working toward their goals. No prior horse experience is required for this role.  Side walkers can gain experience to become horse leaders.

Horse Leaders: Horse leaders assist with rider safety through proper handling and leading of the horse This role is open to individuals with solid horsemanship skills and requires additional training.

“It feels so good to give back,” said Karlyn Lempa, Manes & Motions longtime volunteer, “Building relationships with the students, the parents, and the individuals is the most rewarding part of my week. There is a calming effect at Manes & Motions that we experience as much as the participants.”
