29th Annual Phyllis Hoffman Hartford Jewish Film Festival Launches January 11

West Hartford, CT — The Mandell JCC is proud to present the 29th Annual Phyllis Hoffman Hartford Jewish Film Festival, a captivating celebration of Jewish culture, history, and diversity through the art of film. Taking place from January 11 through April 8, 2025, this year’s festival offers a stellar lineup of thought-provoking films, engaging post-screening discussions, and special events designed to inspire and connect audiences.

Directed by Jennifer Sharp and co-chaired by Becky Azia and Michael Fishman, the festival features a selection of heartfelt dramas, laugh-out-loud comedies, and powerful documentaries that showcase the richness and complexity of Jewish life worldwide.

Opening Weekend Events

Opening Night: Bliss

Saturday, January 11 | 7:00 PM | Mandell JCC

Directed by Shemi Zarhin, Bliss tells the touching and humorous story of Sassi and Effi, a married couple navigating financial struggles and family challenges while holding onto love and laughter. Israeli stars Sasson Gabai and Asi Levi shine in this poignant exploration of relationships, family, and loyalty.

A dessert reception will follow the screening.

Special Presentation: Centered: Joe Lieberman

Sunday, January 12 | 7:00 PM | Mandell JCC

This documentary chronicles the remarkable career of Joe Lieberman, the first Jewish vice-presidential candidate, highlighting his trailblazing role in American politics and dedication to bipartisanship.

Reel Talk: Following the film, join Daniel Papermaster, a former adviser to Senator Lieberman, in conversation with Matthew Lieberman, Senator Lieberman’s son, for an engaging discussion on leadership, faith, and public service.

Festival Highlights

The festival includes 14 screenings, with 8 special Reel Talk events featuring panelists who enrich the cinematic experience with insightful background, opinions, and interpretations. These discussions provide audiences with a unique opportunity to engage with filmmakers, actors, and experts on the themes explored.

  • Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round (Jan. 19): A powerful documentary about the first organized interracial civil rights protest. Reel Talk following the film with Avi Patt, in conversation with Cheryl Greenberg, Paul E. Raether, and Deacon Arthur L. Miller.

  • Unspoken (Tue. Jan 28), an emotional exploration of identity and legacy as a closeted teenager uncovers a hidden family history, with Reel Talk featuring Nathan Schachter, Ann Pava, and Miryam Kabakov.

  • Bad Shabbos (Feb. 8): Directed by Daniel Robbins and starring Kyra Sedgwick and Cliff “Method Man” Smith, this dark comedy puts a hilariously chaotic spin on a family Shabbat dinner in New York City. Winner of the Top Audience Prize at the Tribeca Festival, Bad Shabbos delivers a sharp and unexpected take on tradition, relationships, and the surprises of one unforgettable evening.
