Hartford Symphony Orchestra Presents the Fierce Urgency of Now: MLK Tribute Concert
FREE concert honors the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford
Hartford, CT – December 11, 2024 – Hartford, CT — The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) invites the community to celebrate the enduring legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a stirring tribute concert, The Fierce Urgency of Now: MLK Tribute Concert. This powerful and moving event will take place on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the historic Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford. The concert is FREE and open to the public, with reservations recommended to secure seating.
Under the direction of Music Director Carolyn Kuan, the HSO will present a program that uplifts Dr. King’s message of equality, hope, and unity. Featuring acclaimed vocalist Schauntice Marshall, the evening will blend music, reflections, and the spirit of community in a performance that highlights the transformative power of the arts.

Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, a celebration of resilience and unity.
Florence Price’s Juba Dance, a tribute to African American heritage.
Terence Blanchard’s Malcolm X Suite, a profound exploration of historical reflection.
Select spirituals performed by Schauntice Marshall.
William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, second movement: Hope in the Night, expressing resilience and aspiration.
A Duke Ellington Medley honoring one of America’s greatest composers.
