Introducing New Works at Parkville Art Gallery
Locally owned and operated event and artspace hosts first opening reception of 2025
[HARTFORD, CT, January 16] - New year, new art! Parkville Art Gallery celebrates its first rotation since its grand opening last fall. The inaugural collection refresh and celebration is set for Friday, January 31, at 1429 Park Street, Suite 204, from 6pm-9pm.
The gallery exhibit includes artists Mike Cocco, Jonathan Frechette, Christine Chaise Greenwood, Peter Greenwood, John Hoffman, Suzanne Levy, Meredith Longo, Miguel Jose Matos, Michael Justino Michaud, Grace Storm and Antony Zito. The mediums represented in the 4,000 square foot gallery are wood sculptures, blown glass, painting, collage, photography, and upcycled art.
Since its grand opening, Parkville Art Gallery has welcomed hundreds of visitors. Open Studio Hartford brought in lots of new faces and business opportunities. The gallery doubles as an event space. Most notably, a Hartford-based fashion designer rented the gallery as a runway for her annual fashion show. Additionally, a film crew rented the space for their documentary. Events in the gallery make for a creative backdrop for boardroom meetings, book clubs, and networking meetups. As an added bonus, the events draw exposure to the artists on exhibit.
The conception of this space is credited to artist Miguel Jose Matos, who is also the Gallery Director and artist in residence. After a career in banking and finance, Matos saw a film on Jean-Michel Basquiat and became curious about life on canvas. He began painting around 10 years ago, and now creates 2-3 pieces a day in the studio.
“I can’t say what would have happened if I started painting earlier because I did not attend art school or have received any kind of art instruction,” said Matos in a recent interview. He continues: “It came so naturally to me that I got into a whole period of discovery.”
Parkville Art Gallery has received many submissions from artists and now has a waiting list for further artist rotations. As a sign of good will, Parkville Art Gallery does not charge artists a submission fee, or direct fee to display their art. Matos curates the list of artists; his mission is to showcase Hartford and regionally based artists.
The grand opening celebration on January 31 is open to the public and will serve complimentary small bites from local restaurants. Guests are encouraged to raise a glass with a fresh brew from Dead Language Beer Project, also located at 1429 Park Street on the ground floor. The brewery, serving up European style lagers and American IPAs, will be open for service throughout the duration of the grand opening.
