Chrysalis Center Farmers’ Market Opens July 1st – Provides Access to Nutritious Food Options for North Hartford Residents
Chrysalis Center is pleased to announce its “Homestead Farmers’ Market” will open for the season on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. The market features fresh vegetables and lettuce grown from the organization’s hydroponics program, as well as local farmers.
Located on Chrysalis Center’s main campus at 255 Homestead Avenue in Hartford, the Homestead Farmers’ Market provides fresh local foods to families in the area’s most impoverished neighborhood. In addition to local produce, vegetables and herbs for sale, the market will feature freshly baked goods from Chrysalis Center’s culinary training kitchen, La Cocina, the organization’s commercial kitchen which offers hands-on training for clients.
New procedures are in place this year as issued by the USDA, State and local guidelines to ensure the safety of customers, farmers and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, which include wearing a mask, social distancing and extra hand washing stations.
“Our farmer’s market is a vital staple of the North End community, said Sharon L. Castelli, CEO of Chrysalis Center. It’s a food dessert here, with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and with the pandemic, it has become even more of a challenge for this community. By having our weekly farmer’s market on site, we can not only provide access to locally grown produce which is culturally relevant, but support local farmers, as well. It’s a wonderful partnership. We welcome the community back to Homestead Farmers’ Market and have protocols in place to ensure the safety of our customers, farmers and staff.”
Chrysalis Center’s Homestead Farmers’ Market is part of OH SNAP! a collaboration between farmers markets in Hartford and is open on Wednesdays from 2-5pm and runs through October 7, 2020. It is located in Chrysalis Center’s upper parking lot and open to the public. Visitors may use their SNAP (food stamp), electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, WIC, and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits to buy items at the Market.
