The world is a different place than it was just a few weeks ago. People are staying home. Common gathering spots, like houses of worship and gyms, are closed and social interaction has shifted to the virtual world. But in the 168 years that the YMCA of Greater Hartford has served this city, we have learned how vital having a sense of community and camaraderie is. That is why, even if our doors are closed, we are here to continue providing that necessary resource during this difficult time.
The YMCA is offering free, exclusive content not just to our members, but to the people of Greater Hartford. From daily workouts to family activities, we’ll be providing things to do for you and your family while you are home. We’re also still operating two early childhood education sites, one in East Hartford and one in Plainville, for essential workers.
For our Y members, we have created Y at Home and private Facebook groups where people can come together and share pictures of their hikes, funny memes about distance learning, and just commiserate about missing one another.
For the larger community, the Y will continue to post resources on its branch Facebook pages, but has also developed a public YouTube channel. Playlists on our YouTube include Youth Activities, Group Exercise, Workout & Health Tips, Learn to Swim on Land, and more. In the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding our offerings to include educational childcare activities, senior exercise programs, virtual coffee hours, and more.
